Kelly Estey 2011 weekly racing recap and highlights
HIBBING, MN (August 31) - August was off to a rocky start for Kelly Estey, with a DNF at the Como Mod Series race at Ogilvie Raceway after an altercation on track with another car. In the following weeks Kelly redeemed himself with 8 top 5’s and a feature win at the Hibbing Raceway. Only finishing out of the top 5 a mere 3 times (twice at Grands Rapids Speedway while in the #9 of John Carpenter), August proved to be a good month. Not to mention, on August 21st Estey captured his 25th career track championship. Estey had a comfortable lead going into the last race of the season. Winning by 34 points, Estey celebrated his repeat championship at Proctor Speedway!
Don’t forget Kelly Estey shirts are available for purchase! Short sleeve($20) and long sleeve($25) styles are available. Visit the Estey hauler after the races to purchase one, or contact Kelly@teamestey37.com to have one shipped for an additional $5.
HIBBING, MN (August 5) - After having troubles at AMSOIL Speedway in July 12, Kelly Estey had hopes his weekend would take a turn for the better during the Como Mod Series race at Hibbing Raceway the following night. That it did, when Kelly finished 4th in his heat and captured the win over Darrell Nelson, after a side by side battle for nearly 30 laps. The strong finishes would keep coming the rest of the weekend. Kelly managed a 3rdon Thursday at Grand Rapids Speedway, another win at Hibbing Raceway on Saturday, and an 8th place finish in the Clayton Schwarzkopf Memorial on Sunday at Proctor Speedway.
Kelly kicked off the weekend once again at the Grand Rapids Speedway with Skeeters black #37 Killer chassis. Trying some new setups lead to a heat win and a 2nd place finish. Onto the Governor’s Cup in Hibbing, Kelly again won his heat. On Saturday he raced to a 3rd place finish from his 5th place starting spot. Keeping the momentum going on Sunday, he won his 3rd heat race of the weekend and followed it up by a 2nd place feature finish.
Venturing out of Wissota for a few days, Kelly traveled down to Deer Creek Speedway this past Thursday & Friday in hopes of qualifying for the World Dirt Modified Track Championship, a $20,000 to win show. He made a name for himself at the WDMTC by setting 18th fastest out of 80 cars on Thursday, and 6th fastest out of 70 on Friday. Bad luck followed Kelly to another open motor show, where he was plagued with steering issues, on track incidents, and more. Estey made the trek home on Friday night after the evening was complete, to race at his hometrack Hibbing Raceway. The night started with 2nd in his heat, which started him 8th in the feature. Only a handful of laps were complete when Estey was caught in the middle of a wreck, leaving him with a flat tire and damaged suspension. The crew worked fast under caution to replace the suspension parts, changed the tire and got him back on track. Estey raced from the back and managed a 5th place finish!
HIBBING, MN (July 12) - Racing against a NASCAR great was how Kelly kicked off the week. Wednesday, July 6th marked Nascar night with a guest appearance from Ken Schrader. Kelly started 7th and finished 5th in the heat race. Because he missed the redraw he had his work cut out for him, starting 15th in the feature. As usual, Kelly had no problem weaving through traffic, passing 9 cars on his charge to finish in 4th place. The team took Thursday off, a nice break in what would have been a very hectic schedule. On Friday night at AMSOIL Speedway, Kelly took home the heat race win but suffered mechanical problems due to a broken fuel pump.
The remainder of the weekend took a positive turn, starting with the heat race on Saturday evening at the Hibbing Raceway. Kelly narrowly missed yet another heat win and had to settle for 2nd place to the #90 of Brad Hanson. Not one to be happy with a 2nd place finish, he lined up in the 4th position for the feature and headed straight for the front picking up his 8th feature win of the year. Onto Proctor Speedway on Sunday night, Kelly won the heat race and later won the feature race from the 4th starting position.
Don’t forget! Como Mod Series races #4&5 are at AMSOIL Speedway on Tuesday and Hibbing Raceway on Wednesday. You can also catch Kelly at Hibbing Raceway on Saturday and Proctor Speedway on Sunday for some regularly scheduled racing.
HIBBING, MN (July 6) - The week started after a brief 1 day break in action as Como Mod Series shows were scheduled for Tuesday and Wednesday. Race #2 of the series was held in Ashland, WI on Tuesday June 28th and although Team Estey makes the trek to ABC Raceway only a couple times a year, Kelly continued to run strong in the black #37 Killer Chassis. He won his heat, started 8th in the feature and advanced to finish 6th. Onto race #3 of the series the next night, Kelly started deep in the field(8th) in the heat race and wound up finishing 3rd, and later went on to finish 9th in the feature.
After a break in the action on Thursday night, the Team Estey ventured south for the 7th Annual Minnesota Modified Nationals at Viking Speedway in Alexandria, MN. Kelly started 7th in his heat but suffered a flat tire at the half way mark. Forced to go to the back of the 10 car heat race, he made it back up to 4th, just missing the feature which meant he would have to race a B-main. He started 1st in the third B-main of the evening and remained in the lead for the entire race, eventually extending his lead to nearly half a lap and made it through to start 19th in the 60 lap $7,000 to win feature. Kelly played the strategy game and patiently passed a few cars during the first half of the race. After the fuel stop, Kelly was on the move, maneuvering the field and passing car after car. With 2 laps to go, Kelly overtook 4th and was gaining quickly on the 3rd place runner, but ran out of laps. Coming from 19th to finish 4th in the stacked 25 car field earned Kelly the $150 Hard Charger bonus courtesy of MasterSbilt Race Cars.
HIBBING, MN (June 27) - A busy weekend was had by Team Estey, even though rain would bring a cancellation on Thursday night. Kelly was in for 2 features on Friday night, a makeup feature from June 3rd (which he finished 3rd in) as well as the regular scheduled program. Starting 8th he was able to capture the heat win and went on to start 7th in the feature, but pulled off due to rough track conditions caused by 4" of rain.
Saturday was spent at Kelly's home track, Hibbing Raceway, for another night of double features. A makeup feature from June 18th was first up. Kelly took the lead immediately and never looked back for his 5th win of the season. Going into the regularly scheduled event, Kelly started 5th in the heat and won. Lining up in the 5th starting spot for the feature, once again Kelly quickly overtook the lead to sweep the entire night, capturing two feature wins.
The winning continued on Sunday night at Proctor Speedway where Kelly swept the night, winning his heat and feature to bring his number of wins to 7 for the 2011 season.
Watch for Team Estey at some big events this coming week - the Como Mod Series makes its' 2nd and 3rd appearances at ABC Raceway and Proctor Speedway on Tuesday and Wednesday respectively, with the $7,000 to win 7th Annual MN Mod Nationals rounding out the week at Viking Speedway!
HIBBING, MN (June 22) - The weekend would start and end at Grand Rapids Speedway for Team Estey, as Mother Nature swept through the Iron Range Friday through Sunday. Kelly was piloting John Carpenters #9 once again (and will for the remainder of the season at GRS) on Thursday night. A bad draw lined him up in 8th for the heat race, where he would go on to finish 3rd. Kelly started 7th in the feature and was able to advance one position to finish 6th.
HIBBING, MN (June 13) - Heading back to Tom Clusiau Grand Rapids Speedway on Thursday night, Kelly proved he can win in any car he jumps in. A bad draw would start him in 8th for the heat, but didn’t stop him from charging to 2nd. With the point average invert, Kelly started 4th and went on the win the feature. This marked his first win of the year at the TCGRS in John Carpenters #9. The following night at Amsoil Speedway was a busy one, with three make-up features(from 5/27) scheduled prior to the regular show. Kelly started 6th and won a very exciting, extremely close race by mere inches over #V2 Joey Jensen! As for the regularly scheduled races, he finished 2nd in the heat and 4th in the feature.
Shifting back to the Iron Range For Saturday night, it ended up being a rather short evening for the Modified class. Kelly started 8th and finished 3rd in the heat but before they could line up for the feature, the rest of the program was canceled due to zero visibility on the track. Sunday was another full night of racing at Proctor Speedway, finishing 3rd in the heat placed him in the 8th starting position. The fans saw a great battle with Darrell Nelson #44, which ended with Kelly capturing his 3rd win of the weekend!
HIBBING, MN (June 7) - Following many attempts at a full weekend of racing, the weather finally cooperated and allowed all 4 race tracks in the Northland to run. Kelly switched cars yet again on Thursday to compete in John Carpenters car. After a DNF in the heat race, he made his way from 14th to finish 5th. Friday night at Amsoil Speedway was lining up to be a late one, with makeup features for three classes. Switching back to Skeeter’s Killer Chassis, Kelly walked away from the field to win the heat. Shortly after the MWM feature the night was cut short when the lights went out in turns one and two. (Makeup feature dates TBA)
On Saturday night drivers and fans would finally see the season opener of Hibbing Raceway, one that turned out to be a rough night for Kelly. After winning his heat race, his night was abruptly ended when a fellow competitor did some damage to the car and forced Kelly off the track. Sunday, however, was a turnaround. Kelly won his heat from 4th, and even though he suffered a flat tire in the feature, he would come through the field to finish 6th.
HIBBING, MN (June 1) - Kelly Estey picked up right where he left off in 2010 winning features and racking up the top 5’s in his Matrix Chassis. With area tracks being plagued by rainouts, he has only been able to attend 8 events so far between Ogilvie Raceway, Grand Rapids Speedway, Proctor Speedway and the newly re-named Amsoil Speedway(formerly Superior Speedway). Of the 8 events Kelly has collected 5 top 10’s, 4 top 5’s, and most recently, a feature win at Proctor Speedway in the Killer Chassis (5/29/11).
Ogilvie Raceway was the location of the Como Mod Series kickoff, a series that Kelly is no stranger to. The ’07 and ’09 champion will try for his 3rd series title, one that boasts a $10,000 payout to the winner and a $54,000 overall purse. The first event on 5/25/11 saw 62 of Wissotas’ finest sign in for the night. Kelly advanced from 3rd to finish 2nd in his heat and would later go on to finish 16th in the feature after suffering right front suspension damage. The Como Mod Series makes its’ next appearance at Hibbing Raceway on June 15th.
On the schedule for this coming weekend is Grand Rapids Speedway, Amsoil Speedway, Hibbing Raceway and Proctor Speedway. Don’t forget Kelly won’t be in the usual red #37 Matrix Chassis, instead look for a black #37 Killer Chassis! |
